Head Coach and Trainers: Coach Mahoney Coach@syclions.org Mathew Mahoney is the Head Coach for SYC Lions (4 teams). Coach Mahoney is a nationally-licensed coach with over 18 years experience coaching youth soccer in this area. He holds the USSF National Youth License and USSF "D" License. He has previously coached NCSL travel teams in the 1986 and 1989 age groups; which included players now playing at the collegiate level. Having watched youth play micro-soccer in the Pacific Northwest prior to moving to VA, he was disappointed to see local youth still playing on large fields when he started coaching here. In 1994, as the newly appointed Commissioner for SYC house soccer, he initiated and led a successful effort to change the soccer program to the small-sided format -- the first club in the region to do so. Today nearly all clubs in the region use small-sided games for their youngest age groups. Coach Harry The Lions are professionally trained by Harry Opoku, the premier trainer in Northern Virginia. Harry has trained top NCSL teams for 20 years, developing many superior players who went on to play at university level and beyond. Coach Mondell The Lions are also professionally trained by Mondell Opoku. Mondell grew up playing soccer for SYC teams coached by his father. Assistants: (without whom I would have much more work to do!) Coach Reed: CoachReed@syclions.org Jeff Reed has an "E" license. He played in NCSL and at Lake Braddock HS as a teen. He then played at George Mason University under Coach Gordon Bradley. He continued to play in amateur leagues as an adult, and has been involved in coaching SYC youth teams since 2006 when he began as an Assistant to Coach Mahoney. Coach Tarczynski marcin7950@gmail.com Marcin Tarczynski holds an "E" license and has coached or assisted within SYC since 2006 when he began as an Assistant to Coach Mahoney. He grew up playing the game in his native Poland. (NOTE: Coach Brendan is on sabbatical from the Lions for 2011/12, while he pursues a Masters degree at UVA.) Coach Brendan: brendan@syclions.org Brendan Mahoney has an "E" license. He played in NCSL for SYC and BRYC. He was the team manager/trainer for the R.E. Lee HS Lady Lancers (women's) soccer team from '03-'05. He played recreational soccer at UVA, and officiated games for the UVA intramural leagues. He has been USSF certified as a referee since 1998.
